An electrician was consoling the parents of Anuisha Bone, who had been found dead with a gunshot to his neck when he was called away by a distressed friend, riding right into hot water.

These new details about what was going on in the slain Rockhampton man’s close circle the days following his November 17, 2023 death were revealed in court this week where Simeon Levi Brieffies, 33, pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, one of unlicensed driving – never held a motorcycle licence – and one of operating an unregistered vehicle.

Brieffies is not accused of any involvement in Mr Bone’s death.

Defence lawyer Jess King told Rockhampton Magistrates Court this week that two days later after Mr Bone’s death, Brieffies had been with friends at the home of Mr Bone’s parents (who are not accused of any wrongdoing).

“The deceased was a close friend of my client,” she said, explaining that while at the Bone family home, Brieffies received a call from another friend of Anuisha’s who was distressed about the situation.

She said he hopped on a motorbike and rode to be with the friend.

Police prosecutor Clancy Fox said officers were searching a Rodger Street, Park Avenue, address when they came across the motorbike with a warm engine with no registration plates attached and discovered Brieffies had ridden it moments prior.

The Honda CBR600RR had been stolen from a Gracemere address eight months prior and spray painted black.

Mr Fox said Brieffies told police he had received it “from someone else” but refused to say where.

Ms King said Brieffies was aware the person who had brought the bike to the Bone’s residence had indicated it was not their bike.

“He indicates that simply in the moment, he wasn’t thinking clearly, given the situation,” she said.

Mr Fox said checks revealed Brieffies had never held a motorcycle licence and the registration of the motorbike had been cancelled.

She said his criminal record showed he had prior convictions for unlawful use of motor vehicles occurring in 2016 and sentenced in 2017.

She also said Brieffies had drug issues in the past, but his employment at the mines coincided with him freeing himself of those issues.

Brieffies was on probation at the time of these offences for possessing drugs in 2021.

Ms King said the qualified electrician had been working in the mines recently but started a new job this week with Aurizon.

Brieffies was fined $700 and disqualified from driving for three months.
