Alicia Jane Lee, 23, charged with one count of murder over death of Rockhampton boy Logan Shaun Hawkins

Confronting new case details surrounding the death of a Rockhampton toddler have been revealed in court documents, as a woman remains in custody accused of his murder.

A woman accused of murdering her two-year-old stepson outlined “a series of falls” the child allegedly had the afternoon and early evening before a triple-0 call, court documents allege.

Alicia Jane Lee, 23, has been charged with one count of murder over the death of two-year-old Rockhampton boy Logan Shaun Hawkins.

Ms Lee’s charge was mentioned in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on April 13 where the court heard the brief of evidence was not yet ready to hand to defence lawyer Felicity Davis.

Six adults sitting in the back of the courtroom exited after Ms Lee’s matter was adjourned until May 11.

Meanwhile, court documents filed as part of police evidence reveal the alleged series of events leading up to the triple-0 call Ms Lee made from a Frenchville residence on January 18, 2022, reporting Logan was not breathing.

Police will allege Ms Lee picked Logan up from daycare early that day after he vomited and had an episode of diarrhoea.

The court documents state a close family friend was Facetiming into the car when Ms Lee picked up the boy and the friend alleges they could see him sitting up in his car seat.

Ms Lee told police Logan had been able to walk from the car into the house when they arrived home that afternoon.

The court documents state Ms Lee was the only adult in the house that afternoon and early evening.

During a police interview, she claimed Logan “was happy and running around, had eaten his dinner including ice-cream”.

The court documents state Ms Lee claimed Logan ate biscuits and chips that afternoon at home, and a lamb chop for dinner.

Ms Lee told police Logan had a further diarrhoea episode as he fell and hit his head on the bathtub at bath time.

She claimed that as she cleaned up from the incident, she played with Logan with his legs wrapped around her waist and while he was leaning back, she had her hands under his head and swung him around.

Ms Lee claimed it was during this that he hit his head on the floor.

She told police she then gave him ice cream before bed.

Ms Lee claimed she heard “gurgling, choking” sounds from Logan’s bedroom while she was putting another child to bed.

She told them she ran into the room and found Logan sitting up in the corner of his cot with his arms stiff and not breathing.

Ms Lee claimed she grabbed him and took him to the kitchen where she “began hitting him on his back as he was not breathing”, then placed him on the timber floor, cleared his airways and carried out CPR while calling triple-0.

The court documents state Ms Lee carried out CPR for 15 minutes before QAS arrived and took over, carrying out CPR for 45 minutes before he taking Logan to Rockhampton Hospital.

QAS noted Logan’s “airway was heavily soiled with vomit” and he was unresponsive.

The court documents stated the hospital’s clinical assessment indicated “a degree of pressure on the brain stem” and “a prognosis at the time remained very guarded and it was likely the victim child will not survive this incident”.

Logan was transported to Brisbane, in the company of his father, with a traumatic brain injury and bruising.

Police were called on January 19.

Logan’s life support was switched off by doctors, with support of his family, on January 21.

The court documents outlined findings of his autopsy, which was carried out four days later, including Logan’s body showing significant haemorrhages to both eyes and optic nerves, along with bruising internally and externally including bruising under the skin to the right on his forehead and under his skin to the back left of his skull.

A peer-reviewed report by the physician who was treating Logan just before his death stated he had “too-numerous-to-count multi-layered bilateral retinal haemorrhages” and “there was associated retinal detachment and other injuries associated with abusive head trauma”.

The report also noted the “nature and distribution of the retinal haemorrhages indicate high-force acceleration and deceleration inertial forces being applied to the victim’s head”.

“The nature of the injuries are too severe to be explained by a child falling and hitting their head, and other similarly-aged children in the home would not have the necessary strength to apply these forces to a child,” the court documents from the report said.

“The injuries are so severe only an adult could have caused the fatal injuries.”

The court documents stated the doctor concluded, based on the statements of daycare staff, “a close family friend” and QAS, that the injuries would not have been caused while Logan was at daycare or on the car ride home.

During her interview with police, Ms Lee “specifically denied any sort of ‘shaking’ or other violent actions towards the victim child”, the court documents stated, and continued the denials after being told of the medical reports.
