A man who once threw himself on the front of a stationary vehicle which had stopped due to his ice-fuelled behaviour has now lost his mother’s car to impoundment after repeat disqualified driving offences.

Adam Joseph Hopkins, 22, pleaded guilty on March 28 in Rockhampton Magistrates Court to three counts of disqualified driving, three of contravening police direction, along with one each of obstructing police, evading police, stealing, possess drug utensils, failing to safely dispose of a used syringe, receive tainted property and six fraud (dishonesty) charges.

The first driving while disqualified by court order offence and the drug driving offence took place on June 6, 2021.

Hopkins drove disqualified again five days later, this time evading police.

The third disqualified driving offence took place on George Street, Rockhampton, on July 2, 2021.

In November, he stole a scooter from Lifeline and was found in possession of marijuana.

The court heard Hopkins had a seven-page criminal record and a three-page traffic record which included multiple disqualified driving offences, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and assault occasioning bodily harm.

Hopkins had been convicted for many offences, including jumping on a car in George Street while high on ice, and being part of a group that terrorised a taxi driver by using a stolen car to ram into his parked vehicle and smashing the taxi with a golf club.

He was on parole for the taxi incident when he committed these offences.

Defence lawyer Rebecca Winning said her client had a difficult childhood and was traumatised by his father.

She said he started off using marijuana and moved on to methamphetamines.

Ms Winning said these offences occurred while he was high on drugs.

She said as a result of the driving offences, the car he was driving – his mother’s - was impounded.

“She didn’t have the money to get it back,” Ms Winning said.

“She now has no car.”

Ms Winning said her client “took fright” when he saw police on the second disqualified drive and he evaded them.

The court heard he ran across Queen Elizabeth Drive.

Ms Winning said when he obstructed police, he was frightened of being returned to prison.

Magistrate Jason Schubert sentenced Hopkins to 12 months prison and set parole eligibility for July 27, 2022.

He also disqualified him from driving for eight years and three months.
