A man who stole four cars in a fortnight had only been released from prison three weeks earlier having served a sentence for unlawful use of cars.

His co-accused in one of the crimes posted photos of the offence on social media.

Aaron Paul Harrison Gulf, 23, pleaded guilty on March 28 in Rockhampton Magistrates Court to four counts of unlawful use of motor vehicles and one count of possessing a dangerous drug.

Mullacoo Geraldine Josephine Lottie Ross-Freeman, 25, pleaded guilty on the same day to one count of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, two of possessing a dangerous drug, one of possessing items suspected to be tainted property, one of failing to appear in court and one of dishonestly gaining cash.

Police prosecutor Brandy Butler said there were unlawful use of motor vehicle convictions scattered throughout Gulf’s seven-page criminal record.

She said he was sentenced in November 2021 for similar offending, receiving a six month prison term and was released on parole on January 25, 2022.

Gulf unlawfully used the first stolen car between February 15-20, the second between February 22-26, the third between February 27 to March 3, and the fourth on March 1.

He was also found in possession of one gram of marijuana on March 2.

Ross-Freeman’s unlawful use of a motor vehicle charge was from March 2, and she was busted in possession of marijuana and suspected tainted property – bank cards, a drivers licence and a watch belonging to another person – that same day.

She was also found in possession of 2.2g of methamphetamines when police were dealing with her for an incident at an ATM on December 15 where the person who used the machine before her had left their card in the machine and Ross-Freeman used it to withdraw $500.

Magistrate Jason Schubert said Ross-Freeman was seen running from the stolen car and ran back to retrieve a mobile phone and bag.

He said police found photographs on her phone of her and co-offenders with the stolen car.

Ms Butler said Ross-Freeman was on a probation order at the time of her offending.

Gulf’s defence lawyer Brendan Gimbert said his client went through Sorry Business after his release from prison and didn’t cope well with grief, having not much support, so he returned to using methamphetamines and marijuana.

Mr Schubert sentenced Gulf to a nine-month prison term, declared 26 days presentence custody with immediate parole eligibility.

He sentenced Ross-Freeman to a four-month head sentence, declared 26 days presentence custody and set parole release for April 11, 2022.

He said Gulf planned on getting counselling help for his grief upon his release from custody.

Mr Gimbert said Gulf grew up spending time between Woorabinda and Brisbane with his mother moving to Brisbane 14 years ago to care for her mother.

Ross-Freeman’s defence lawyer Ken Spinaze said his client’s brother died by suicide when he was 11-13 years old and she was nine or 10 and she suffered depression as a result.

He said she started using marijuana in her teenage years and started using meth after being incarcerated.

Mr Spinaze said Ross-Freeman had an eight-month-old child who was being raised by her mother.

He said Ross-Freeman wanted to kick her drug addiction and straighten up her life.

Mr Gimbert said his client returned to Rockhampton to see his four-year-old daughter.

He said after he left school, he fell in with the wrong crowd but had worked in stainless steel manufacturing and hoped to find work in Brisbane when released from custody.
