A Central Queensland plant operator has been charged over a fatal crash on the Capricorn Coast in September 2022 that claimed the life of a Fraser Coast man.
Aaron Leif Sjolund, 46, was charged with one count of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death or grievous bodily harm.
It is alleged in court documents that Mr Sjolund dangerously operated a motor vehicle on the Scenic Highway in Lammermoor, between Clayton Road and Mulambin Road, on September 2, 2022 and caused the death of Wade Joel Sangwell, 32.
Mr Sangwell, a father-of-two from Maryborough, was remembered in tributes from friends after the crash as having ‘a laugh that was full of happiness’ and being the ‘greatest dad to to both of his little boys’ and a ‘wonderful partner’.
“A heart that was made of pure gold, he always had a spare hand to help anyone at any time, when he was near it was guaranteed that you would be smiling and laughing with him,” a friend wrote in a GoFundMe created to raise funds for his family.
“Words can’t explain the person he was.”
According to police, initial investigations indicated about 12.40pm a truck and car collided along the Scenic Highway and that Mr Sangwell suffered critical injuries and died at the scene.
A second man suffered chest and abdominal injuries and was flown to Rockhampton Hospital in a serious condition.
A man and a woman were taken to Capricorn Coast Hospital in stable conditions.
Mr Sjolund, who lives in Kinka Beach, was charged with the offence on December 8, 2022 and was granted bail that same day.
His matter was last mentioned in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on March 29, where he was represented by solicitor Rebecca Harris.
The matter was adjourned to April 19.
