After two years of hard work, the Mount Morgan Railway Museum has a new attraction taking pride of place.

The volunteer team at Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc have spent the past two years restoring a 1903 Hunslet Steam Locomotive.

On Wednesday and Thursday (April 12 and 13) the rail yard underwent upgrades to facilitate the locomotive and also allow the potential for future displays.

The whole project was a joint effort between Rockhampton Regional Council, MMPAD and Aurizon.

Aurizon donated about 200 concrete sleepers, the time of about 20 staff and a track inspection to get the project across the line.

The track inspection first took place in July last year, to assess the condition of the track at the rail museum and scope the works.

The completion of the project means further rollingstock may be able to be moved safely for placement under a covered area and preferred locations for restoration with a view of creating future displays.

Aurizon’s Civil Assets and Maintenance teams worked together to support MMPAD with their initiative to promote the town’s rail history.

MMPAD president John Steinberger said the project had “recognised interest” from all group and expressed his appreciation to everyone involved.

“With completion of the project we expect huge improvements to the complex with the added visitor experience with the viewing of the old steam loco,” he said.

“I cannot thank the volunteers, led by volunteer technical team leader, Ken Winter, enough for the restoration works they have put in over the last two years. The refurbished steam locomotive is a sight to be behold.”

The workers used the experience as a team building experience and to give back to the local community.

Aurizon track assets engineer Paul Johnstone said it had been a pleasure to help bring the project to fruition.

“Giving back to the local community to assist with their historic rail museum is a great opportunity to show our support for the communities in which we work,” he said.

Rockhampton Regional Council Communities and Heritage councillor Drew Wickerson said the works would make the Railway Museum an even better experience for visitors.

“The Mount Morgan Railway Museum is a fantastic part of our country’s cultural heritage, and it’s already a great facility to visit,” he said.

“Having the steam loco on display, however, will add so much to the experience for visitors.”

Divisional councillor Cherie Rutherford commended everyone involved in the project.

“I know how much work hard work has gone into getting to this point, and how much passion,” she said.

“This is a fantastic project for the community, and I know it will be a proud day for those who made it happen.”
