A drug addict involved in a knifepoint carjacking, where the victim was interrogated about their bikie associations, has been jailed for extortion after he demanded she give him $600 or he would blow up her car.
Guy James Weldon, 28, had participated in a violent carjacking where the co-offender held a 10cm bladed knife to a woman’s throat and “and she was told to do what the party said or she would get stabbed”.
Rockhampton District Court heard Weldon had met the woman in a pokie room and that he had stolen the car off her and later told her to change her police statement because he didn’t want to do five years in prison.
Judge Jeff Clarke said Weldon later called her, while she was at the police station, again demanding she change her statement and give him $600 or he would sell the car for $600 or burn it or blow it up.
Weldon also made reference to a firearm, telling her he would get “his piece”.
He was later arrested after police had to use tyre deflation devices.
Weldon pleaded guilty in court on March 10 to one count each of extortion, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, stealing and obstruct police.
The court heard Weldon had a 17-page criminal record.
“You’ve led a largely lawless life,” Judge Clarke said.
“It would seem to me the hope for your future rehabilitation is lost.”
SISTER DIED BY SUICIDE, MUM ALCOHOLIC
Defence barrister Maree Willey said Weldon, who has a 12 year old daughter, had a “particularly disadvantage upbringing” whereby his mother was an alcoholic and there was domestic violence in the home.
She said he lived on the street by age 11, drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana.
Ms Willey said his sister died by suicide when he was a teenager, which led to methamphetamines usage, and his father died from an assault when he was 22.
Weldon had been dealt with in Rockhampton Magistrates Court in December for charges linked to this offence where the court heard he was drunk and high on drugs at the time of offending.
Judge Clarke sentenced him to 18 months prison, cumulative on his sentence handed down in December, with parole eligibility set for April 12, 2023.
