Kershaw Gardens: Vandals cause damage to decking on bridges and waterfalls

There was damage caused to the decking and bridges, including burn marks and cracks in the rails, at a popular Rockhampton recreational spot. Full details here.

Vandals have taken to structures at Kershaw Gardens, causing $69,000 worth of damages.

Rockhampton Regional Council believes the damage was caused some time in March and appears to have been caused by privately owned motorised bicycles, e-bikes or e-scooters.

The damage was caused to a smaller bridge at the site, with 80 per cent of the decking damaged and a significant number of burn grooves, the larger bridge over the rapids at the waterfall has about 60 per cent of decking damage and cracking in some of the supporting rails and deck trim and the waterfall deck damaged.

The matter was briefly mentioned in council’s Corporate Performance March report.

“This kind of behaviour not only affects the community members who use the areas but creates a substantial cost for the council to rectify the damage,” a council spokesperson told this publication.

“We urge anyone participating in acts of vandalism to stop and think carefully of the repercussions of your actions and the effect this has on the wider community.”

No CCTV footage was taken of the damage taking place and council has not been able to confirm the exact equipment that caused it.

According to council, the damage done would have been “very difficult but not impossible to be done by a Neuron e-scooter”.

“Neuron are working closely with council to ensure behaviour on their devices are safe and to the communities standards,” a council spokesperson said.

The Neuron e-scooters now have low speed mode (15km/h) on the decking and bridges damaged in Kershaw Gardens, as a preventive measure.

An official police report could not be filed due to the lack of detail around the damage.

Council workers have begun work to clean and patch repair the damage.

Members of the public are encouraged to report damage to the Rockhampton Regional Council on 1300 22 55 77 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
