A tribute to the owner’s coffee-loving father, Gus’s coffee has expanded from a mobile van business to a franchise spanning four locations and has now been named Rockhampton’s best coffee place of 2023.

After serving coffee across the region with his mobile van business for around a year, Jason ‘Gus’ Korda opened his first store for Gus’s Coffee’s in 2013 on Musgrave St, North Rockhampton.

Since then, the business has expanded to two more stores in Rockhampton, located at Stockland and St George St in South Rockhampton, and at a drive thru in Yeppoon.

Mr Korda and his late father, Gus Senior, would have coffee together almost every day while he was working at his previous manufacturing business.

“I said to Dad, one day I want to make coffee for you,” Mr Korda said.

“I’m going to make you a cafeteria in the showroom (of the factory), so we can share coffee that you love together.”

Gus Senior was well known in the restaurant industry, working the majority of his working life as a waiter and chef and all rounder.

He had a passion for coffee, so naturally he was very critical about how to create the best coffee.

After surviving a massive car crash, he sadly passed away a few years later.

“This business is my dad’s legacy,” Mr Korda said.

“I just wanted to make coffee for and with my dad but he died, so I never got to do that.”

After his father passed away, Mr Korda visited Rockhampton and fell in love with the slow pace of region.

“It just seemed to be the right timing and we started Gus’s mobile van in my father’s name,” he said.

“At Gus’s Coffee, we strive for quality of service, which my Dad was always really passionate about.”

Mr Korda values making each customer feel special and believes that excellent service matters even more than the product itself.

“My favourite part of the job is watching people have a fantastic experience in the stores and thoroughly enjoying our unique blends.”

Collaborating with an exceptional roaster, Mr. Korda skilfully developed Gus’s Red Label and Black Label coffee blends to capture the flavours that he knew his father would love.

Mr Korda and the team at Gus’s coffee are also embracing technological advancements, taking various efficiency measures with the introduction of Roboway, an exclusive contactless payment system available only at Gus’s drive-through in Yeppoon.

“I’m very thankful for our amazing staff, the franchisee owners, my amazing family and loved ones, and especially the support of the community,” Mr Korda said.

“This wouldn’t be possible without them.”

The Fast Lane Drive-Thru Coffee in Rockhampton came runner up with 10 per cent of the vote.
