Firefighters are at the scene of a vegetation fire that is in inaccessible country along the Fitzroy River with the smoke blowing across the water and in to Depot Hill.
The smoke can be seen from across the Rockhampton region.
Fishermen and other witnesses on the southern side of the river told The Morning Bulletin they noticed the fire just before 3pm and had not noticed any unusual activity near where it started before that.
A Queensland Fire Department spokesman said one urban crew and two rural crews were at the scene at The Common at the end of Reaney Street.
He said the fire was in inaccessible country and “slow moving”.
The spokesman said the fire was “burning steadily with no immediate threats”.
Nearby electricity towers could be seen in the area.
The QFD spokesman said the firefighters were considering aerial support to extinguish the fire.
The fire is burning along the riverbank towards Rockhampton.
