Offers to purchase the old Catholic Church at Marlborough are now open after Livingstone Shire Council put the freehold land and building up for sale.
The church site, at 22 Milman Street, is adjoined by three parcels of land that were used for a public park.
In 2019, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockhampton advised council it was selling the four parcels of land and gave council the first option to purchase.
Council purchased the land for $80,300, including the church site, to ensure the park remained for the Marlborough community to use, with the intention to sell the church at a later date.
Mayor Andy Ireland and Councillor Glenda Mather at a recent meeting criticised how long it had taken to sell the church.
Council officers were waiting on a second valuation because they believed the first valuation was “surprisingly high”.
Tenders for the church building and freehold land opened on February 14 and will close on March 7.
The church was formerly the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
The tender documents state the land size is 1012 sqm and services include mains water, main electricity and telephone.
The building requires “some structural repairs” and is 120 sqm with a front patio of 5 sqm.
Inside includes the central part of the church, a priest’s room with a shower and hand basin and a store room.
The building is not connected to a sewerage or a septic system.
The church’s foundations are concrete stumps with a timber frame, the walls are made of fibre cement, with a corrugated galvanised iron roof.
It is noted the building does have asbestos based materials.
The land and building are being sold “as is where is”.
Tenders will be weighed on price and sale terms.
