Emmaus College win open mixed title for third year running at Qld All Schools Touch

Year 12 student Jayda Geddes scored two touchdowns in grand final to help Emmaus claim memorable milestone at Qld All Schools Touch.

Jayda Geddes finished her school touch career in memorable fashion.

The Year 12 student scored two touchdowns for Emmaus College’s open mixed team in their grand final win at the Queensland All Schools Touch Championships.

Emmaus ran out 4-1 winners over Southport High to claim the title for the third consecutive year.

Geddes was named the girls player of the final, while teammate and co-captain Liam Barnes took the honour for the boys.

Emmaus had five teams in action, all of which made it to the round of 16 or better.

Fellow Rockhampton school The Cathedral College also enjoyed another successful campaign at the carnival, crowned overall champion school for the third year running.

Their open boys and under-13 girls won their divisions, while the under-15 girls were runners-up.

The under-13 boys and under-15 boys were top four and the open girls top eight.

The winning Emmaus mixed team, which was undefeated in its 10 games, was coached by Gary Benbow and Lisa Norris.

“It’s a great performance,” Benbow said.

“The way they came together in the last two days of the carnival was what really impressed me.

“This is a younger side but they knew what to do and when to do it.”

Benbow said Emmaus’s fitness proved a telling factor in the final.

“We had a lot of run in our legs and our opposition got tired,” he said.

“We just stayed in the grind, and slowly wore them down.”

Benbow said Geddes and Barnes were outstanding all carnival and deserved their grand final accolades.

He said Year 10 student Barnes, who is in the Australian youth squad, played with a lot of maturity.

Benbow has enjoyed plenty of success as a coach, and said he was grateful to Emmaus for this opportunity.

“I’ve had the pleasure of winning three in a row so it’s been a great journey so far,” he said.

“To be honest, there’s no reason they can’t go back to back to back to back.”
