Emergency services rush to serious crash along Leichhardt Hwy, Westwood

A man’s condition has improved after he was flown to hospital with potentially life threatening injuries following a serious single-vehicle crash which shut a Queensland highway. UPDATES

A man’s condition has improved after he and another suffered serious injuries in a single-vehicle crash along a highway in the Rockhampton region.

Emergency crews rushed to the Leichhardt Hwy at Westwood, west of Rockhampton, about 4pm on Saturday.

Initial investigations indicate a Mitsubishi Triton ute was travelling north along the highway when it left the road and rolled.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said a woman in her 50s and a man in his 60s were treated at the scene by paramedics.

The spokeswoman said the man, 67 from Westbrook, had a potentially life-threatening head injury, while the woman was in a serious condition with chest and head injuries.

A Queensland Fire Department spokeswoman said two crews arrived about 4.50pm to find one of the vehicles rolled over in the middle of the highway.

She said they worked to rescue a person trapped in one of the vehicles by cutting through a rear passenger door.

The man was flown to Rockhampton Hospital with “life-threatening” head injuries, while the woman, 65 from Westbrook, was taken by road with non-life-threatening injuries.

A Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service spokeswoman said on Monday that both the man and the woman remained in hospital in stable conditions.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the incident and is asking any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

The Leichhardt Highway was closed to all traffic north from Dululu to the Capricorn Hwy, with the road reopening after 9pm.
