Driver Brendan Cowley would be counting his blessings after he escaped uninjured from a spectacular crash at the weekend’s speedway meeting in Rockhampton.
He was rounding the first corner in the B Main at the Queensland modified sedans state title event at the Rockhampton Showgrounds when his car became airborne and mounted the fence.
On-site ambulance officers rushed to assess him, and he was cleared of any serious injury.
A female spectator is believed to have suffered a leg injury.
McCosker Rocky Speedway president Daniel Pearce described it as a “pretty scary incident”.
“He just clipped the tyre from a car and hit the wall and his accelerator stuck and he mounted the wall and took out some posts of the catch fence and ended up resting on top of the wall,” he said.
“Everyone was okay; the fence did what it was supposed to do and the crowd control barrier did what it was meant to do.”
Pearce said that a team of volunteers then swung into action to remove the car and repair the fence, allowing racing to resume about 45 minutes later.
“We had to first and foremost make sure that the driver and everyone in the crowd was safe and uninjured,” he said.
“The on-site ambulance checked everyone over and made sure everyone was fine before we could move anything or get anything under way.
“We had to extract the car from the wall, and carry out repairs on the fence so we could get the meeting underway again.”
