The skill and experience of CQ Capras women’s skipper Mariah Storch came to the fore as she orchestrated her team’s opening round win in the BMD Premiership.
The Capras proved too strong for the Tweed Seagulls, scoring a 22-4 victory at Rockhampton’s Browne Park on Saturday.
The Capras men also prevailed with NRL star Anthony Milford landing a field goal in the 78th minute to seal a thrilling 23-22 win, also against the Seagulls.
The inclement weather failed to deter footy fans who turned out in their droves for the two games - and they were treated to some fantastic football.
They were left to marvel at the efforts of second rower Storch in the women’s game.
She proved unstoppable, finishing with a personal tally of 10 points courtesy of a try and three conversions.
Victorious coach Amanda Ohl was full of admiration for her skipper.
“That was inspirational from Mariah Storch,” she said.
“She went out there and led by example. I couldn’t have asked for a better captain’s knock from her.”
Second rower Tarni Smith scored the Capras first points of the season when she crossed in the 13th minute.
Halfback Reeghyn Beardmore and winger Krystal Sulter were the other try scorers.
Ohl said that other big performances came from lock Ta Steere, hooker Mackenzie Reid and prop Maa Barnett.
Teen sensation Lilly Yarrow also made her first appearance at senior level and it was a debut to remember, according to Ohl.
“Lilly Yarrow, what a super star. I can’t say enough about that kid, she’s all effort,” she said.
“There’s a great football brain between those ears and I can’t wait to see where she goes with her career.”
The Capras women’s next opponents are the Burleigh Bears at the Gold Coast next Saturday, while the men head to Townsville to tackle the Blackhawks on Sunday.
