New glamping tents have launched at a Yeppoon caravan park, filling a gap in the booming accommodation market on the Capricorn Coast - an area touted as ‘the new Byron Bay’.

Poinciana Tourist Park at Cooee Bay changed hands mid last year and the new management has been busy at work carrying out major upgrades.

The new glamping tents are the first of their kind in Central Queensland and have all the features of a hotel room with a bed, fans, fridge, lounges and a deck with tables and chairs at the front.

The glamping tents have also been built around a common-area gazebo and barbecue area and a modern designed container swimming pool.

Poinciana Ventures development manager Matthew Ouston said the glamping tents offered a budget option for travellers.

“When we were creating the glamping area, we wanted couples, families and single people to stay here,” he said.

“With the boom we have had in Yeppoon at the moment, everywhere is booked out but also prices have gone up.

“A two night stay to get away to the beach for the weekend is less affordable.

“We wanted to offer different options, people can make it what they want it to be.”

They have also installed a new camp kitchen and ensuite amenities.

New cabins are the next item on the project list, with the old ones to be demolished at the end of the September school holidays.

The 12 new cabins planned for installation have a modern look and will offer studio, deluxe and family options.

“(We wanted to) create another market for people, a bit more upscale than the glamping tents,” Mr Ouston said.

“Throughout the park, our main goal is to improve on what we’ve got to continue to make our current guests happy and develop various types of accommodation and facilities.”

In the long-term, Mr Ouston envisions turning the park into more of a resort style offering with a recreational centre and pool area.

“We’ve got a fair bit of land here, when you stay in a hotel you have the four walls … Our communal feel here has been a big hit, people actually talk to each other and you’re not separated in a little hotel room,” he said.

Occupancy has been strong across the business, with a core group of people coming through looking for a beach holiday.

“There’s a big mix, during our winter months a lot of our caravanners are grey nomads from down south, Sydney, Melbourne … They come up to escape the cold and for the beach lifestyle,” Mr Ouston said.

“We also have the young families or the couples doing the Queensland coast.

“The other people are the drive market of the few hours outside of Rockhampton, Gladstone, Emerald up to Mackay.

“Because of our location in Cooee Bay, we are right by the beach and there’s shops and stuff, people can just stay here and don’t have to worry about travelling around too much.”

Feedback from their guests is their number one priority.

“Our goal is to make people happy on their holidays,” Mr Ouston said.

“We have signs up in our tents and throughout the park for people to let us know what we can do better.”
