Central Queensland’s elite rugby league club has joined the growing chorus of local groups and businesses throwing their support behind the Rockhampton Ring Road as the region-building project faces delays amid a $700 million cost blowout.

The Central Queensland Capras have stepped forward to show their support for the local community it represents, as debate around the project rages and local stakeholders join a convoy to Canberra to demand answers this weekend.

Capras CEO Peter White said that as proud Central Queenslanders, everyone needed to come together as one to advocate for and support the region’s communities for projects such as the Rockhampton Ring Road.

“Our club is proud to show our support for this project as well as any other major initiatives that benefit Central Queensland and Central Queenslanders,” Mr White said.

“I feel confident that the decision makers and our local and federal politicians are fighting hard to bring the ring road project to fruition.

“I love the passion that our community continues to show when it comes to wanting positive things to happen for our region.

“Our passion is best shown on the sporting field, however we are 100 per cent behind our local community as the potential benefits are huge and we deserve to benefit as much in the regions as they do in the cities.”

Mr White said as well as the ring road project, the Capras would also continue to push for local sporting facility upgrades in Central Queensland, so training and playing requirements could be met for rugby league of all levels, as well as in other codes.

“Rockhampton is very much “underdone” when it comes to suitable sporting facilities that cater for training, playing competitions and hosting of regional and state carnivals,” he said.

The lack of suitable lighting and female compliant dressing rooms means that our clubs struggle to find suitable facilities for training let alone hosting a state carnival.”
