Central Queensland welcomes new generation of doctors

The Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service has welcomed 26 new graduate doctors for a two-year internship.

The Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service has welcomed a group of new graduate doctors for a two-year internship.
After their two-week orientation, the interns will complete a rotation at various departments and hospitals in Central Queensland, including placements in Gladstone, Yeppoon, Emerald, Rockhampton and Theodore.
Director of Medical Services Dr Michael Kirk said he was proud to provide a start to the careers of the young medical graduates.
“Central Queensland is welcoming 26 new interns to the community this week.”

“This is a wonderful time for our newest bunch of doctors here to provide care right through Central Queensland.
“Our interns are being fully integrated across Central Queensland, they’re getting to know the community and hopefully call this place home.”
Medical intern Nicole Fernandez moved up to Rockhampton for the program after growing up and studying in Adelaide.

She said she chose to undertake her internship in Central Queensland because of the wide range of experiences available to medical students in regional areas compared to metropolitan areas.
“You get so many different experiences in a regional setting in comparison to metropolitan areas,” Ms Fernandez said.

“Because the community is so small, you’re actually able to invest yourself fully and learn more from your patients in this area.
“That was one of the things I was looking for when I decided to undertake the internship in Rockhampton.”
The young interns will be able to hone their skills in a range of departments, including emergency, cardiology, general surgery, orthopaedics, mental health, paediatrics, obstetrics, gynaecology, medicine, critical care and general practice.
