Emmaus College sensation Lillian Yarrow was the inaugural winner of the Reg Cannon Award for the Female Player of the Carnival.

The Queensland under-19 squad member was a model of consistency at lock across the team’s five games.

The Cathedral College’s tireless halfback Alenna Whipp received the Carbine Club Spirit of the Carnival Award.

Emmaus finished third in the nine-team girls competition, after beating TCC 12-4 in the playoff.

The inaugural girls title was won by Marymount College, who beat St Patrick’s College 18-10 in the final.

St Brendan’s and TCC made the top four of the boys’ competition but lost their semis.

St Brendan’s were beaten 12-6 by the eventual winners, Ignatius Park, while TCC went down 16-6 to host school, St Patrick’s.

The two Central Queensland teams then played off for third and fourth, with St Brendan’s running out 38-6 winners.

Coach Scott Minto was impressed with what his team did, and particularly the spirit they showed in the semi.

“We faced a really strong football team in Iggy Park and pushed them all the way. It was only through lack of execution that we were unable to finish them off,” he said.

“The game was a real nail-biter and the crowd was vocal when the score was 8-6 with less than 10 to go on the clock. The final siren came too fast and we ran out of time.”

Minto was also pleased with how his players “got up for one last game” and scored a comfortable win against TCC to secure third place.

“We did what St Brendan’s College teams always do; we came together and formed an even stronger bond and left nothing out on the field which is the SBC way,” he said.

“We are very proud of all of the boys for their conduct and effort and earnestly look forward to the resumption of the Dolphins Cup.”

Minto said it was “the icing on the cake” to get three players in the merit team.

“Matt Hill we all know is a star of the future and grabbed the fullback spot, while 16-year-oldsJett Day and Tavita Penaia also made the side, which is full of talent.

“What an incredible achievement.”
