Rockhampton is primed for a strong showing at the Queensland under-13 boys hockey championships.

The Aaron Harmsworth-coached outfit will be among 23 teams contesting the event, which runs from Sunday to Wednesday at Gladstone.

Rockhampton are in Division 1, and in Pool B alongside Gold Coast 1, Toowoomba 1, Townsville 1, Brisbane 2 and the Fraser Coast.

They play Townsville 1 in the opening game at 10.10am Sunday.

Host centre Gladstone lines up in Division 2, in a pool with Warwick, Toowoomba 2, Mackay 2, Douglas and Toowoomba 3.

Their first game is against Warwick at 12.50pm Sunday.

The carnival will run as a round robin competition, with players vying for Queensland selection.

Harmsworth said Rockhampton was a good all-round team.

“We have been playing in the under-15 girls competition locally to get match practice, and getting to know each other well,” he said.

“The boys are keen to get on the park and hopefully the weather gods will allow it.

“We will play on grass and turf so have prepared for the two different surfaces.

“It is great our neighbours in Gladstone get to host a state title and I know they have a lot of volunteers who will help make it a success.”

Five key players for Rockhampton:

Eli Landsberg (striker): Will lead the team in attack. A skilful player who can score a goal from any position.

Egan Cass (midfield): Skilful player who is very determined in a one-on-one contest. A competitor.

Jace Harmsworth (midfield/defender): Has good vision and is a non-selfish player with a solid tackle. Will be crucial to the organisation of the team.

Alfred Timms (defender): Has come along in the past 12 months. Has speed to cover-defend very well.

Braedan Prinsloo (midfield/striker): Has all the skill sets to be a midfielder or striker. Great passing skills with plenty of elimination ability.
