Carolyn Roberts wins Open Wedding Cake Competition at 2022 Rocky Show

Decades of going to the Show and baking has paid off for Carolyn Roberts who is a member of the Rockhampton Branch of Cake Decorators. Find out why.

Carolyn Roberts has been going to the Rockhampton Show since she was 17 but this year it was much sweeter.

The member of the Rockhampton Branch of Cake Decorators won the Open Wedding Cake Competition and the cooking part of the competition with her dark rich fruit cake.

“I’ve been doing it for about 50 odd years and about 20 years ago I joined the Rockhampton Branch of Cake Decorators,” Ms Roberts said.

“And then I just took it from there, and as I’m getting older I’m getting better.”

Ms Roberts didn’t enter any other local shows with her cakes this year, but the she did enter the international cake show that was held in Brisbane in May for the first time.

There, she entered two competitions and placed third in both.

Ms Roberts said she was looking forward to entering more of the international cake show events next year.

Ms Roberts said she gained her expertise through her willingness to try new things and her connection with the cake decorators.

“Well I started when I was about 20.

“I wanted to decorate my oldest son’s birthday cake and then I just took it from there.

“I was sort of doing it on my own until I got involved in the cake decorators.

“And they taught me a lot and it just went from there.

“So it’s been a rewarding experience.”

Ms Roberts said she loved everything about the Rockhampton Show, even though she won’t go on the rides anymore.

“I’m getting a bit old for them now.

“I just like people looking at things and giving their opinion.”

Ms Roberts hopes the people who saw the cakes gained inspiration and knowledge.
