BlueScope proposes to build new warehouse on vacant land at Parkhurst

A leading manufacturer and supplier of steel products hopes to expand in a key Rockhampton industrial area. Find out what the plans are here.

BlueScope records ‘best ever profit result’

Industry continues to grow at Rockhampton’s major industrial precinct in Parkhurst with Australian steel company BlueScope revealing plans to build a warehouse in the area.

A development permit application has been lodged with Rockhampton Regional Council by planners Urbis, on behalf of the land owners, Wild Mint Parkhurst Pty Ltd.

The company, registered to a Brisbane address, bought the land at 10 Barton Court for $1.32 million in April.

The proposed designs in the development application show BlueScope signage on the warehouse.

The warehouse would be built fronting Barton Court, a new road to be constructed in the industrial area.

The application states the site is a one hectare block of vacant land, zoned as high impact industry.

The site is behind the land where the city’s old Yaamba Road Cement Works silos are located and has frontage to Barton and Kiln courts.

The application states the proposed development “involves a medium impact industry involving processing, altering, storing and distributing of sheet metal. The activities proposed on site involve cold forming sheet metal only. There is no hot forming, boiler making or metal foundry activities proposed”.

The building would have a height of 10.8 metres and have 30 car parks.

BlueScope was originally part of BHP Billiton but 20 years ago it became its own company.

It is one of the world’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of painted and coated steel, selling products for houses, buildings, structures, automotive and more.

In August, the company announced a record profit of $2.8 billion in the past financial year; its best result since it was listed on the stock market.

The record profits have been attributed to the country’s high steel prices.

Lysaght, which has a facility in Alexandra Street in Kawana, is a division of BlueScope.

The development application will now be assessed by council planning officers.
