North Rockhampton residents can rejoice – an Aldi supermarket could finally be coming to the northside.
New plans for the supermarket to be built in a stand-alone building at Stockland Rockhampton were lodged with Rockhampton Regional Council last month.
The building is proposed to be built in the car park near the Kmart end of the shopping centre, towards the new Green Leaves Early Learning Centre currently under construction, and Mandalay Medical Centre.
The proposed supermarket would have a gross area of 1,725 sqm and would take up 123 of the car parking spaces, leaving the shopping centre with a total of 2,706 car parking spaces.
The single storey building would have a floor to ceiling height of 6.25 metres.
An awning would be constructed to connect the supermarket building with the existing shopping centre entry and pedestrian crossings.
Access to the shopping centre would not be changed, however the existing loading and servicing area would be reconfigured.
Landscaping is proposed throughout the site and the car park shade trees will be retained.
Rockhampton’s first Aldi opened in October 2019, after years of promises.
Then-mayor Margaret Strelow asked Aldi to come to the city in 2013 and again in 2015.
The German supermarket giant announced in 2017 it would be coming to Rockhampton with two stores, one on the southside and one on the northside.
The northside store was planned to be on Yaamba Road, on the vacant land in front of Spotlight, however Stockland appealed this development application in planning court.
Mediation was held between the two parties and the appeal was later withdrawn.
This new development application could be some months before it is approved by council.
Council planning officers have requested more information from the applicant, which has until September to reply.
This publication also announced this week Coles had also lodged plans for a new, small scale shopping centre at the former Bunnings site on Yaamba Road.
The centre would include a state-of-the-art Coles supermarket and some minor stores, one of which is to be Liquorland, and a stand alone separate building that could be used for a gym.
The application also proposed 12 four-bedroom townhouses at the rear of the complex, facing Potts Street.
This application is also pending council approval.
