‘A top bloke’: Rugby league community in mourning after losing Andrew Kennedy in Fitzroy River boating tragedy

The Rockhampton Rugby League Referees’ Association has paid tribute to its life member and a fundraiser has been started for his family after a tragic boat incident on the Fitzroy River.

The Rockhampton Rugby League Referees’ Association has paid tribute to life member Andrew Kennedy who died in a boating incident this month.

On its Facebook page, the association also shared details of a Gofundme page that has been set up to help Andrew’s family cover funeral expenses.

Andrew, 57, died during an incident at the Rockhampton Ski Gardens, on the Fitzroy River, on the afternoon of October 19.

Paramedics were called there about 4.30pm after Andrew suffered critical injuries in a watercraft incident.

Capricornia District Duty Officer Senior Sergeant Ralph Faria from Rockhampton Police at the time said it appeared Andrew was testing his tinny in the water when the tragic accident occurred. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

“We are struggling to get everything together at the moment as the nature of his death is going to delay any necessary paperwork to access his money as well as his life insurance,” the Gofundme page, set up by Andrew’s daughter Karen Gabel, says.

“We have no expectations but anything will be helpful and greatly appreciated.”

The Gofundme page, as of Thursday afternoon, had raised $4800 of a $10,000 goal.

“My father passed away suddenly on October 19th,” Karen says on the page.

“He was an amazing man who truly improved the lives of everybody he knew.

“He was mum’s carer and the sole provider.”

The Rockhampton Rugby League Referees’ Association said on its Facebook page: “Our life member and good friend Andrew Kennedy passed away.

“A gofundme page has been set up to assist with his funeral expenses.

“Please assist by making a donation.

“Big or small it doesn’t matter as every dollar will help.

“RIP AK.”

Steven Hamilton, who has held positions including Rockhampton Rugby League Referees’ Association co-ordinator and Queensland Rugby League referees development officer, wrote: “RIP AK. My thoughts are with you all at this time.”

Rob Ryan said: “A great colleague and friend. RIP.”

Giarc Kilog described Andrew as “a top bloke.”

“My thoughts and condolences goes out to Andrew’s family,” Mr Kilog said.

“A top bloke with a quirky sense of humour.

“Am so glad I met this man. Take care all.”

The Morning Bulletin featured Andrew in articles over the years, including for his work as a Rockhampton psychotherapist with Mental Health Consultancies.

Andrew’s funeral will be held on Wednesday, November 3, at St Joseph’s Cathedral, William St, Rockhampton at 10am.

Andrew’s family, friends and colleagues are invited to attend.

“Many of us will be wearing Hawaiian shirts in dad’s honour,” his daughter Karen said.
