Residents in Brisbane’s south who received an anonymous “asbestos warning” notice in their letterboxes regarding a nearby construction site and have labelled it as “scare mongering”.
A mystery sender has dropped “deadly asbestos in this area” letters for residents neighbouring the Bulimba Barracks constriction site on Apollo Rd, Bulimba.
“Asbestos has been found at the Bulimba Barracks construction site. The contractor BMD is putting you and your family at risk,” the notice said.
“No protection for residents. You have the right to know.”
Mike, who did not want to provide his last name, said the “pile of asbestos was about 30 metres from houses”.
“It’s windy and there’s a massive pile of asbestos sitting 30 metres from houses. It’s crazy. They should be moving it as soon as possible. Not just moving it around,” he said.
Another resident labelled the notice as “silly and frustrating”.
“If asbestos is found, most likely there will be, then the contractor has to by law remove safely. This kind of information is scare mongering and is not helpful to the community at,” Alice Edwards said in a post to social media.
A spokeswoman for BMD said it is committed to “safely managing material containing asbestos”.
“BMD was engaged to deliver the Remediation and Civil Works project at the Bulimba Barracks which includes safely managing material containing asbestos in compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements for asbestos management,” a spokeswoman said.
“These works involve engaging licensed contractors for appropriate disposal and the use of independent parties for inspections of the site.
“BMD’s number one priority is always the safety and wellbeing of our people, and the members of the communities we work within. We remain vigilantly committed to prioritising the safety of our employees and the Bulimba community in the delivery of this project.”
