Parts of Queensland could expect “shockingly cold” temperatures, and frost every day this week, as many areas record lower-than-average July temperatures towards the weekend.
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Livio Regano said next weekend could be colder than the one we’ve just had across South East Queensland.
Mr Regano said some areas across the southeast, such as Applethorpe, recorded -0.5C overnight, with colder temperatures expected by Saturday.
But before the cold snap, it is expected to get a bit warmer.
“We are coming out of [the] weekend cold snap and things are getting milder, then there will maybe be an even colder snap,” he said.
“In between the weekend, there will be a slight warming trend, cooling down by the end of Friday in Brisbane.
“There will be bright sunshine, no rain and probably not any clouds.”
On Thursday, Brisbane should expect minimum temperatures of 10C and Friday could have 13C.
While temperatures will be slightly warmer during the week, Mr Regano said frost across the Granite Belt will be continuous all week.
“It will still be cold enough for frost everyday this week,” he said.
“The broad area from the Eastern Downs to the Central Highlands all the way west of the Charleville, over the next several days could experience frost every single day.”
The cold change is expected to start near Toowoomba on Friday before making its way to the coast on Saturday.
“Friday will be shockingly cold and windy inland. Toowoomba will have a top of 12 and the wind and chill will be quite incredible,” he said.
“There’s still a chance a grazier warning could go out.”
During the week areas like Stanthorpe and Dalby will have temperature of maximums around 20C and minimums of 3C. By Saturday it will be -1C minimums.
On the weekend, Brisbane will reach a high of 21C and a minimum of 7C.
Mr Regano said the temperature across SEQ was below average for even July. In July Stanthorpe’s minimum temperatures were 1.1C, while Brisbane’s is 9C.
