Parts of southern Queensland have shivered through their coldest morning of the year with warnings the cold snap is set to persist for at least the rest of this week.

The state experienced its first subzero temperatures, with Wellcamp just west of Toowoomba recording -0.4C at 6.20am.

Brisbane, Oakey, the Sunshine Coast and Amberley all recorded their coldest minimum temperatures so far this year.

Oakey got down to 0.3C at 6.34am, with the apparent temperature a chilly -3.7C.

Brisbane got down to just 12.5c at 3.25am while at Amberley it was just 4.1c at 6.16am.

The Bureau’s Danny Teece-Johnson said the exceptionally cold mornings would continue through to the weekend and could get even colder next week.

“This is typical of later May temperatures rather than early May,” he said.

“We’ve had a high in the Great Australian Bight over the Tasman that’s pushed up these southerly cool and dry winds.

“The weather pattern that we’re seeing now will push into the weekend, and next week temperatures will dip down again, that cold front will be a bit cooler than the temperatures at the moment.”

Mr Teece-Johnson said clear skies over the next few days would bring overnight temperatures down further.

“This weekend temperatures will be similar to what they are now – 26 to 27C around the coast, 14C overnight and cooler in the hinterlands.”

“Next week we will get cooler minimums with 10 C expected in Brisbane on Monday morning but then sunny and 23C during the day.”
