Queensland Parliament House transformed into period film set for Disney+ series Nautilus

A heritage building in the heart of Brisbane was transformed into a period film set complete with horse-drawn carriages as filming on a major series returned.

It was an unusual sight in Brisbane on Monday as horse-drawn carriages lined the entrance to Queensland’s Parliament House.

The heritage building in the heart of the CBD was transformed into a period wonderland on Monday night with Disney+ series Nautilus returning to the city to film scenes at the George St location.

Locals shared images of actors and extras dressed in period costumes with some riding horse-drawn carriages, which lined the street in front of large blue screens.

In one video shared to Facebook, yelling extras were seen mobbing the front of the building.

The 10-part live action series is the first origin story of Captain Nemo from Jules Verne’s epic 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and his legendary submarine, the Nautilus.

It has been filming at Village Roadshow Studios on the Gold Coast since February.

Taking advantage of Brisbane’s heritage buildings to create the period settings, the production was last scene filming at The Old Museum in Bowen Hills in May.

The series stars British actor Shazad Latif, who plays Nemo, and Australia’s Georgia Flood.

The production, lured to Queensland through a $23.3m cash injection from the Federal Government and further supported by Screen Queensland, will inject an estimated $96 million into Queensland’s economy and create around 240 local jobs.

It is one of a number of large-scale productions underway in southeast Queensland, with Netflix series Boy Swallows Universe also filming in the city and the Godzilla vs Kong sequel filming on the Gold Coast.
