Disney blockbuster Nautilus underway on the Gold Coast with international cast

Cameras have rolled on Disney+ original series Nautilus on the Gold Coast, with an international cast set to bring the Captain Nemo origin story to life

Premier Palaszczuk confirms new Disney production to be filmed on Gold Coast

Filming on juggernaut Disney+ series Nautilus is underway on the Gold Coast with Shazad Latif and Australia’s Georgia Flood leading the cast.

Cameras rolled on the big budget live action adventure series at Village Roadshow Studios this week with British actor Latif starring as Captain Nemo in the retelling of Jules Verne’s epic 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea – the first origin story of the iconic character and his legendary submarine, the Nautilus.

Flood plays Humility Lucas, a privileged daughter of the British Empire who is taken hostage on board the Nautilus, and French actor Thierry Frémont plays Gustave Benoit, a French engineer and architect of the submarine.

The production follows season two of NBC series Young Rock, which wrapped filming at Village Roadshow Studios on Tuesday.

It has been in pre-production at the Gold Coast venue since early January.

The 10-part live action series, which will film for the remainder of 2022, will inject an estimated $96 million into Queensland’s economy and create around 240 jobs for local cast and crew, as well as include 350 extras.

The Morrison Government offered $23.3 million in funding through its Location Incentive program while the production was also supported through Screen Queensland’s Production Attraction Strategy.

It is the first Disney production to film in Queensland since the Pirates of the Caribbean film in 2015 and Thor: Ragnarok the following year.

In a release on Thursday, the plot was listed as: “an Indian Prince robbed of his birthright and family, a prisoner of the East India Mercantile Company and a man bent on revenge against the forces that have taken everything from him.”

“But once Nemo sets sail with his ragtag crew on board the awe-inspiring Nautilus, he not only battles with his enemy, but discovers a wondrous underwater world, learns to take his place as leader of the crew, and goes on an unforgettable adventure beneath the sea.”

Australian actor Damien Garvey will play ruthless Director Crawley, of the East India Mercantile Company, which will stop at nothing to capture the Nautilus.

Other cast members in Nemo’s crew are Pacharo Mzembe as Boniface, Arlo Green as Turan, Tyrone Ngatai as Kai, Ling Cooper Tang as Suyin, Andrew Shaw as Jiacomo, Ashan Kumar as Ranbir, Chum Ehelepola as Jagadish, Céline Menville as Loti, and newcomer Kayden Price as Blaster.

The production will use the water tanks previously critical to the success of films including Aquaman in 2017.

Michael Matthews, who previously worked on Love and Monsters in Brisbane, will direct the series, which is produced jointly by two British companies, Moonriver TV and Seven Stories.
