HUNDREDS of motorists have been slapped with fines for illegally parking around Brisbane schools under the city council’s latest crackdown.
The Courier-Mail can reveal 504 parking fines worth tens of thousands of dollars were dished out to divers around schools across the city in semester two last year.
Council targets 60 Brisbane schools in crackdown on illegal parking
Council steps up patrols as students head back to school
The worst school for parking fines in term three was Somerville House, where 83 drivers were hit with fines, while the worst in term four was Anglican Church Grammar School, with 28 parking fines issued around the school.
It comes after the council received almost 1100 complaints about illegal and dangerous parking around schools in 2019.
The council targets 60 schools every term, including those that ask for assistance and others that are identified as illegal parking hot spots.
Council public and active transport committe chairwoman Krista Adams said the visible reminder of a parking inspector was effective at reminding motorists to park safely and legally.
“I understand school pick-up and drop-off can be busy, but dropping off children where it is unsafe is just not acceptable,” she said.
“The last thing we want to see is someone hurt, and we will continue to proactively patrol schools to keep everyone safe.
“If drivers do the wrong thing, council will issue a warning or fine.”
Rounding out the top five schools with the most parking fines in term four was Villanova College, Somerville House, St James Primary School and Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School.
The other schools included in the top five for term three were Corinda State High School, West End State School, Pullenvale State School and Indooroopilly State High School.
Another 60 schools are expected to be on the council’s radar when school resumes later this month.
“When school returns in 2020 I remind everyone to not take an unnecessary risk and to follow all the road rules,” Cr Adams said.
“They are in place for a reason.”
The Courier-Mail previously revealed that the council had budgeted to collect $37.5 million from parking fines in the 2019-20 financial year — or more than $100,000 every day.
It comes after the council made about $22.7 million from parking fines the previous financial year.
