PARENTS dropping their children at school and picking them up will be targeted by parking inspectors under a back to school crackdown on dodgy drivers.
It comes as new figures reveal motorists copped at least $117,000 in fines for illegally parking around Brisbane schools in semester one, with Stretton State College and Churchie topping the list.
The Courier-Mail can reveal 60 schools will be on Brisbane City Council’s radar when school resumes for term three today.
Among them are Ascot State School, Brisbane State High School, Windsor State School, Oxley State School and West End State School.
Milton State School, Brisbane Boys’ College at Toowoong, Grand Avenue State School at Forest Lake and Indooroopilly State High School are also on the target list for term three.
Last semester, parking inspectors carried out 628 patrols across more than 60 schools, dishing out 1194 fines and 20 warnings for illegal and dangerous parking in school zones.
Drivers around Stretton State College on Brisbane’s southside were given the most fines, with 109 parking offences, followed by Anglican Church Grammar School with 100 fines and Darra State School with 87 fines.
There were also 72 fines slapped on motorists outside Kedron State High School, while Eagle Junction State School rounded out the top five with 64 fines.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said parking inspectors would hit the streets around Brisbane schools in the coming weeks in high visibility vehicles, serving as a reminder to drivers to park safely and legally.
“You can’t put a price on safety or the cost of a life,” he said.
“I ask everyone travelling through school zones or stopping to pick-up or drop-off kids, please don’t take an unnecessary or illegal risk.
“These laws are in place for a reason — to keep our kids and everyone in the community safe.”
The schools that will be targeted this semester were either self-nominated, community nominated or identified by the council as an illegal parking hotspot.
The council has ramped up its parking enforcement efforts around schools in recent years.
