Graham Quirk’s replacement as lord mayor about to be decided
Julian Simmonds and Nicole Johnston most warned Brisbane councillors this financial year
She will square off against sitting Labor MP Graham Perrett, with the federal election expected to be called within days.
Cr Owen, who also serves as chairman of council, will not be stepping down as a councillor while she contests the election.
She told The Courier-Mail she was humbled by the support she had received for the move from locals.
“To contest the seat of Moreton is an extension of my commitment to serve the people of the southside of Brisbane,” she said.
“As an accountant I can foresee the devastating impacts the Labor policies will have on the community, from the cradle to the grave.”
Cr Owen also touted her long-term dedication to working with multicultural communities, pointing out that 60 per cent of people who lived in Moreton had at least one parent born overseas.
Cr Owen was first elected to council in 2008, and has won re-election twice.
She previously worked as an accountant, as well as across all three levels of government, before embarking on her own political career.
Her council colleague, Julian Simmonds, is also running as a candidate in the 2019 federal election, for the seat of Ryan.
Cr Simmonds gave his farewell address to the chamber last week ahead of resigning from council to focus on the contest.
