JUST over a third of southeast Queensland council members have registered membership to one of the country’s major political parties.
59 out 164 local government councillors have pledged allegiance to either the ALP, LNP or Greens, with metropolitan councils overwhelmingly being made up of party affiliates.
Yet the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) does not see party politics as an issue, saying that SEQ councils are the least politicised in the country.
“The LGAQ has no issue with political parties endorsing candidates to run at council elections,” a spokesman said.
“There has been no increase in party politics in SEQ councils over the last decade.”
LGAQ said on average that 70 per cent elected members across the region are not members of political parties.
Yet major metropolitan councils tell a different story, indicating that party influence has saturated local governance.
In Brisbane City Council, 26 of 27 council members are registered with one of the major political parties, making it the most politically charged council in the state.
20 councillors hold membership to the LNP, five to ALP and one to the Greens.
At Gold Coast City Council, LNP blue ribbons decorate the hall of the council chambers.
A total of eight councillors of the 14 have LNP affiliation, none have ALP affiliation.
The LNP have had a strong footing in the Gold Coast since 2008, after continuously running candidates in council elections.
LNP councillors also litter other regional councillors including Southern Downs, Lockyer Valley, Toowoomba, South Burnett, Somerset and Sunshine Coast.
The ALP have two affiliated councillors at Logan and Ipswich (all sacked) with no opposing LNP members.
Two Councillors in Gympie and Redland City retain membership to minor parties.
Councillor Paul Gleeson from Redland City is a member to Australian Better Families Party, and Gympie councillor Glen Hartwig is an active Katter Australia Party member.
Noosa Shire Council is only SEQ council to not have any party affiliation and is entirely made of independents.
Of the 164 southeast Queensland elected local government councillors 102 are non-aligned, 45 represent the LNP, 14 the ALP, one The Greens, one KAP, and one is affiliated with the Australian Better Families Party.
