Radical resolutions ahead of LNP state conference

From vehicle registration discounts for good drivers to bans for politicians from free airport lounge access - these are the resolutions up for debate at this weekend’s state LNP conference.

Politicians would be banned from accepting complimentary memberships to luxury airport lounges under a radical resolution set to be debated at this weekend’s state LNP conference.

The resolution, put forward by the Lytton branch, is one of 129 set to be debated over the three-day conference kicking off in Brisbane on Friday.

Also on the open resolution agenda for debate was a push from the Young LNP to bring back the upper house in Queensland – abolished more than 100 years ago – and a resolution to oppose the acquisition of Suncorp Bank by ANZ.

The Clayfield branch have put forward a resolution urging the party to oppose the $2.7bn redevelopment of the Gabba, and commit to hosting a “fiscally responsible Olympic and Paralympic Games in Queensland”.

A resolution to a “publicly internet accessible debt clock” that continually reports state government debt, each local government council debt and each government wholly owned entity debt, including the interest and capital repaid was also on the agenda, as was a resolution for the party to lobby the federal government for a Royal Commission into the Covid pandemic.

A rejection of vaping regulations, a discount of registration costs for good drivers, bringing back IDs for voting, debate on the role of the ABC, an audit of sexually explicit materials from schools and opposition to a move to a cashless society were also on the cards.

But likely debates on contentious party issues such as the Voice and Treaty were likely to take place behind closed doors.

Asked whether he expected the debate on those issues to be tense, Opposition Leader David Crisafulli said “I’m unsure” – but said it was part of being “a grassroots political movement”

“People regardless of where they live, whatever branch they’re a member of, they get to be able to debate those issues,” he said.

“There isn't some sort of central casting that only allows someone from a certain faction, or certain longevity of the party, or whether or not they are an elected official.

“And that means that there will be things that get debated that I strongly believe in, and that means there will be things that are debated that I don’t agree with.

“But if you believe in grassroots democracy, that’s a healthy part of it.”
