New state government data has revealed the Queensland postcodes harnessing the sun’s renewable energy through solar panels.
Regional Queensland dominates the list, with Bundaberg leading the way with 15,690 homes with solar panels installed.
Hervey Bay and Urangan came in second with 14,017 homes, and Caloundra through to Pelican Waters claimed third with 12,821.
Toowoomba and Mackay round out the top five solar panel postcodes.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said more than 722,000 Queensland homes had panels installed.
“Together, Queensland’s homes account to over 3.5GW capacity, that’s more generation capacity than Queensland’s two largest power stations combined (Gladstone 1680MW, Stanwell 1460MW),” Ms Palaszczuk said.
Deputy Premier Steven Miles said a new solar system was connected to the Queensland grid every 11 minutes.
“While rooftop solar supplied 8.9 per cent of Queensland’s total energy needs last financial year, in the middle of the day it can represent more than 40 per cent of generation,” he said.
Suburbs rounding out the top 40 include Browns Plains, the northern Gold Coast and South Stradbroke Island, Bribie Island, and western Townsville.
