Former Senator Amanda Stoker has secured preselection in the safe LNP seat of Oodgeroo, setting her up for a run at the 2024 Queensland election.

Ms Stoker beat ordained Anglican priest Daniel Hobbs in the head-to-head preselection battle in the bayside seat.

Former Bowman MP Andrew Laming had considered a run for Oodgeroo but pulled out a few weeks ago.

Ms Stoker received 65 votes to Mr Hobbs’ 48

“As someone who talks with a lot of Queenslanders, it is clear the Palaszczuk Labor Government has lost its way,” Ms Stoker said.

“We need a government that will stem the chaos at the Redlands Hospital, take youth crime seriously, improve housing supply and reduce cost pressures for local families.

“We need a government that will listen and take action to address the things that are most important to our local community.

“I am proud to join the LNP team and work with David Crisafulli to deliver real solutions and the change Queensland so desperately needs.”

Opposition Leader David Crisafulli said Ms Stoker would bring a wealth of experience to the team.

“As a former Senator, Amanda has a proven track record of serving Queenslanders,” he said.

Oodgeroo MP Dr Mark Robinson (LNP) announced earlier this year he would be retiring at the next election, declaring at the time his hoped a woman would replace him.

The LNP has now preselected 10 candidates for the 2024 election, eight of them are women.

Ms Stoker was a Queensland Senator from 2018 to 2022, losing her spot in the upper house at the recent federal election after being relegated to the third spot on the LNP’s ticket.

If she is successful at the 2024 election it would not be the first time federal parliamentarians have revived their political careers by securing a Queensland state seat.

Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath represented the federal seat of Petrie before losing that seat in 2013 and entering the state parliament in 2014.

Agriculture Minister Mark Furner is a former Queensland Labor senator.
