THE first look at what Brisbane southside residents can expect from the $465m expansion on the QEII Jubilee Hospital has been unveiled.
The artist impressions, released today, showcase a new five-level building.
The state of the art project, which is due to begin within months, will increase the hospital’s bed capacity by 112 beds and add a bigger intensive care unit and more operating theatres.
The extension is part of the government’s $14bn Health Big Build, under Queensland’s Big Build initiative and completion is estimated for the second half of 2027.
Queensland’s Health Big Build is delivering over 3300 additional hospital beds.
“Brisbane’s southside is one of Queensland’s fastest-growing regions and we want
to make sure locals have access to high quality healthcare for years to come,” Health Minister Shannon Fentiman said.
“That’s why the Miles Government is making a record investment towards building
and expanding our hospitals. This new state of the art building with more than 110 extra beds and expanded operating theatres will provide more local healthcare and create more local jobs,” she said.
QEII also opened Ward 4A, a new 28 inpatient extension late last year.
Works are ongoing on additional infrastructure for the allied health and outpatient’s departments.
Metro South Hospital and Health Services serves an estimated 1.2m residents. QEII, Logan Hospital, Princess Alexandra Hospital, Beaudesert Hospital and Redland Hospital are all in the HHS.
Member for Mansfield Corrine McMillan said the extra 112 beds at QEII would have a profound impact on both patients and the healthcare team.
“The QEII Hospital Expansion is the next chapter in a transformative story for
healthcare in Brisbane’s southside. This project builds upon recently delivered infrastructure, adding a new building to significant expand surgical and inpatient capacity,” she said.
“The project also incorporates state-of-the-art facilities, enabling the hospital to offer
a diverse range of elective procedures that will service the community for years to
come.”
Member for Toohey Peter Russo said the expansion would help alleviate pressure on the busy emergency department, which treated nearly 65,000 patients last year.
“Beyond the 112 additional beds, the project will provide a range of critical supporting infrastructure. This includes more treatment spaces and expands capacity in both the surgical and intensive care units,” he said.
