PRIME Minister Scott Morrison swapped his suit for flight goggles today as he hailed American power during a visit to the USS Ronald Reagan off the coast of Brisbane
The PM travelled on a US C2 Greyhound plane to the aircraft carrier where he addressed thousands of American navy personnel stationed on the $4.5 billion ship.
The visit came ahead of Exercise Talisman Sabre kicking off on Friday, with a Chinese warship also lurking off the coast to spy on the joint military exercise between the US and Australia.
Speaking to the naval personnel, Mr Morrison declared the US was more than a great power, but also an “old and dear friend” and a “great force for good throughout the world”.
“Yes, we are in awe of the strength and power of the United States which this ship so ably represents,” he said.
“But at the heart of our friendship are the values and beliefs that knit our two countries together.
“Ships will come, ships will go, politicians will come and go, but our values will endure.”
Mr Morrison’s flight to and from the ship involved an arrested landing and a catapult take off in scenes that were more reminiscent of an action movie.
He also took to the air carrier’s flight deck along with America’s Ambassador to Australia Arthur Culvahouse to watch the US super hornets take to the skies.
