Parking meters set to be turned back on in Brisbane

Brisbane’s free city parking is about to end after meters were turned off for almost two months to encourage people back into the city and provide financial relief after the floods.

Brisbane residents have less than a week to take advantage of free parking in the City, with meters to turn back on next Monday.

Motorists have saved an estimated $3.5 million since the meters were turned off in early February, providing some much-needed financial relief during the Omicron wave and the devastating flood event that followed.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner on Tuesday announced parking meters would return to normal from Monday, 4 April, including enforcement by Council officers.

“We turned our parking meters off following the first week of February to help Brisbane’s economy,” Cr Schrinner said.

“We extended the on-street parking relief following the flood, so people did not have to worry about paying for parking as Brisbane recovered from the devastation caused by the city’s biggest-ever rain event”.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the recent floods caused damage to some parking meters and motorists will need to use the parking apps to pay at certain locations while machines are repaired or replaced.

Some parking meters have sustained flood damage and won’t be repaired come Monday, so motorists would need to use apps like Cellopark to pay for parking at certain locations across Auchenflower, Milton, Bowen Hills, Newstead, Fortitude Valley, South Brisbane, Kangaroo Point and Woolloongabba.

But Cr Schrinner reminded residents that 15-minute free parking would still be available at 2869 on-street parking spaces throughout the city.

“This 15-minute free parking makes it easy for people to quickly pull in and duck into local cafes and retailers without having to put any money into the meter,” he said.

“It’s been a tumultuous start to the year for many, but especially our businesses, so it’s important that we make a conscious effort to visit and spend money at local cafes, restaurants and retailers”.
