Retailers are reporting the popular Yamba king prawns are in short supply, but there are plenty of schoolies.

Eddie Kurz of Outlaw Seafoods said he had managed to source some of the scarce kings to sell from his truck at Harwood.

“There is a big shortage on king prawns at the moment, we have got one of the brightest moons of the year now,” he said.

Clarence River Fishermen's Cooperative manager John Robson said the lack of king prawns could probably be put down to recent wet weather.

“We are getting a lot of good quality ocean school prawns and river schoolies, he said.

“With water coming out of the estuaries and the recent rough seas, kings tend to go out to sea and into deeper water.”

Colin Hambly of Naeco Blue seafood at South Grafton said overall he will have a good supply of seafood, including schoolies, bugs, lobsters and mud crabs.

“Unfortunately we won't have any local king prawns, any caught will probably go to the Sydney fish market,” he said.
