A developer is planning a major overhaul of a Noosa shopping centre with a new village precinct and cinema part of the vision.
Stockwell lodged a development application with the Noosa Council on May 25, 2023 for a mixed-use village precinct and a revamp of the Noosa Civic.
The developer has also announced it has plans for construction of a Reading Cinema.
The Noosa Business Centre is between Walter Hay Dr, Eenie Creek Rd and Hofmann Dr and includes the Noosa Civic shopping centre, and showroom and business precinct.
Stockwell managing director Mark Stockwell said the planned village in the Noosa Business Centre would offer convenience and specialty retail not currently in the area.
He said 100 “build-to-rent” apartments, mostly of one or two bedrooms, and a mix of professional suites and offices were planned for the upper levels of the village.
This is in addition to the 90 Hof Noosaville apartments also planned for the area.
Mr Stockwell said about 15 Hof apartments remained for sale and about 80 per cent of those who had bought were from the region.
Some were couples or single people who were downsizing, he said.
The centrepiece of the proposed village is the cinema and Mr Stockwell said his relationship with Reading had started more than 22 years ago.
The developer intended to not only make the cinema a place for blockbuster movies but for community events like art shows.
Mr Stockwell said the main theatre would also have a stage, which would allow the cinema to host events like business conferences.
The Reading Cinema would be the second movie theatre in the shire, along with an Event Cinema on Sunshine Beach Rd at nearby Noosa Junction.
Stockwell completed the subdivision of the Noosa Business Centre earlier this year.
“We have achieved council’s approval for the Noosa Civic Medihub and Hof apartments, which are in the early stages of construction,” Mr Stockwell said.
“We have an application currently being assessed for an early learning centre.
“And now we have lodged the application for the village precinct and existing centre refurbishment.”
Stockwell opened Noosa Civic 17 years ago and reacquired the shopping centre and adjoining land in 2019.
A Noosa Council spokesman said the development application was lodged but was yet to be updated in the council’s online system.
