Mystery yellow object washes up on Double Island Point on Teewah side

A mystery yellow object has washed up at Teewah Beach with a state government expert giving insight as a hunt for the owner starts.

A Moffat Beach man has found a mystery object at Double Island Point with speculation rife about its use.

A maritime safety expert says the state government is trying to track down the object’s owner.

Geoff Feeley has camped at Teewah Beach “on and off” for the past 30 years but has never found anything like the mysterious yellow object he came across on Thursday morning.

He went for a drive, on low tide, to Double Island Point and found it south of the Leisha track on the Teewah side.

“It’s the first time I’ve found anything like this,” he said.

“Maybe the odd coconut before but nothing of this significance.”

The object has two lights on top and is shaped like a little boat with a cavity in the middle and two rudder-like pieces of plastic at its rear.

It has the number 285, written in blue, in the cavity.

Curiosity got the better of Mr Feeley, who photographed the object and then used a phone app to find similar photos online.

He said similar objects showed them being towed behind a vessel to map the underground contours of the sea floor.

Another reference, the 64-year-old said he found, was that they were used in a military application to locate dummy targets.

Mr Feeley said it did not appear to be a cheap piece of equipment.

“There’s a little light sitting on top and it’s not working,” he said.

Speculation about the object online ranged from being part of the rock band’s The Beatles yellow submarine to a buoy to signal a navigation hazard.

Maritime Safety Queensland general manager Kell Dillon said the state government was “aware of a buoy” that had washed up on the beach.

“MSQ is making enquiries to identify the owner of the buoy,” he said.

“It is also monitoring the risk of the buoy refloating while these enquiries are made and may take action to secure it if necessary.”
