For World Heart Day last September, Noosa’s Hilary Clear posted on Facebook “I will look after his heart forever”.
It was a moving but defiant declaration of love for her 39-year-old partner Kirk Shearer who was battling to recover from a heart attack caused by a blocked artery a month earlier.
Now after struggling to resurrect their once thriving business Mobile Dog Grooming Noosa from the scrap heap, Ms Clear hopes a landlord has the heart to rent them an affordable place to live.
Along with their large “fur baby” Buttons, they have been given notice to be out of their Sunshine Beach rental property by July 15.
“I’m begging and hoping something comes up,” Ms Clear said.
“I just want Kirk to be comfortable and happy, that’s all I want.
“We have no idea where we’ll go, we’re looking at everything, trying everything.”
Their predicament deepened in the lead up to last Christmas when Mr Shearer was laid low a second time by a cystic brain lesion the doctors are still unsure how best to treat.
“His heart’s too weak to have an operation,” Ms Clear said.
She is still upbeat about turning their fortunes around now the couple has brought on-board dog groomer Ollie Apps to replace Mr Shearer who is unlikely to work again.
“Ollie’s awesome – a customer rang me one day to say they know someone who’s a groomer who’s come back from Canada,” Ms Clear said.
“The response to restarting has been pretty good, some of our original customers are coming back – it’s like you’re building a new business all over again.
“Before Kirk’s heart attack we were doing six, seven dogs a day.”
Ms Clear said her partner was slowly regaining his strength.
“He can go for walks and potters around the garden, but he can’t do any heavy lifting and he doesn’t sleep very well,” she said.
