A Queensland motocross star and X Games medallist has died in Victoria while practising the trick which made him a legend.

Jayden “Jayo” Archer, 28, was the first freestyle motocross rider to land a triple backflip in competition when he landed the massive move at the Nitro World Games in Brisbane two years ago.

Only two other motorbike riders have ever landed a triple backflip in official records.

The Gold Coaster died on Wednesday while attempting the same trick in practice in Freshwater Creek near Geelong.

In a tragic twist, his last post on his TikTok account was him successfully landing the trick, captioned “Triple flips are back!!!!! LFG 💪🏼#foryou #fyp #viralvideos #trending #letsgo @O’NEAL Racing @Black Rifle Coffee @Nitro Circus”.

The tight-knit moto community was in mourning on Thursday as news filtered across social media of his passing.

He was due to marry his fiancée Beth King later this year.

Fellow freestyler and motocross rider Harry Bink wrote a tribute on Instagram to “one of the toughest humans on this planet”.

“This kills me to write this post…” he wrote.

“RIP to one of the toughest humans on this planet. Jayo lit up every room he walked into with his energy and his good values.

“He wasn’t scared of much and I really admire him for it. I first met Jayo as a teenager and we had a lot of mad times over the years as mates as well as competitors. Many times of my life I looked up to Jayo even though he was a couple years younger than me.

“I don’t think even Jayo even knows how much we are all going to miss him.

“Very proud to have met Jayo, been apart of his life and his outgoing mind set.

“My thoughts are with Jayo’s family a billion times over.”

Archer proposed to his long-term girlfriend minutes after performing the triple backflip at the 2022 Nitro World Games, delighting the crowd.

Archer was a two-time X Games medallist and had been planning to become the first rider to perform a quadruple backflip.

He had spent more than a decade touring with the Nitro Circus, thrilling crowds around the world with gravity-defying tricks.

Speaking to the ESPN website in the US, Nitro Circus founder Travis Pastrana paid tribute to “a great human and a bad motherf*****”.

“This really hit home,” he said.

“Jayo grew up in a time when action sports was at its biggest, and he always wanted to do the big stuff like the double and the triple, even though there weren’t a lot of places to showcase those bigger tricks.

“He stayed at my house and was an incredible role model to my kids.

“He was a great human first, a hard worker second and a bad mother*** third.”

Archer also worked as a suspension technician for Raceline Performance on the Gold Coast, where staff learnt of his passing on Wednesday night just as they prepared to unveil their pro race team at a season launch.

Co-worker Jayden Coker said Archer’s death was “a massive loss to the whole motocross community”.

“He was a really, really good bloke, a real genuine dude,” he said.

“He had done some amazing things and had some more stuff in the pipeline.

“We were gutted to find out last night but he would have wanted us to keep pushing on.

“We wouldn’t have got to where we are without him.”

Archer had been in Melbourne practicing ahead of an upcoming competition in Europe.

Nitro Circus posted on its Facebook page, calling Archer “the epitome of passion”.

“He pushed what was possible on a dirt bike to heights never seen before,” the post said.

Motocross websites and social media pages around the world were also quick to pay tribute to the star rider.

“The world lost a modern-day gladiator,” wrote Nathan Brown on Facebook.

“This is a devastating reminder of why this is the most dangerous sport on the planet.

“Jayo will never be forgotten. His legend will live forever.”
