FEDERAL MP has been forced to apologise after pushing a child out of the way during a fun run in his Brisbane bayside electorate.

Mum Kylie Mairs of Thornlands said she was shocked to discover the man who shoved her 12-year-old son, Reece, was Andrew Laming, the LNP member for Bowman.

“He didn’t even check to see if he was all right,” she said. “That was disgusting. I’m absolutely amazed at what he has done.”

Ms Mairs said she was taking part in the Redlands Coast Fun Run last Sunday with Reece, who had stopped ahead to let her catch up.

“Andrew Laming came up from behind me. Because (Reece) had stopped, he literally pushed him out of the way and kept running,” she said.

“I yelled at him, a friend beside me yelled at him. ‘This is a fun run, you don’t push kids out of your way at a fun run.’ He had plenty of time to go around him.”

Ms Mairs said the push, which took place halfway through the run, knocked her son to the side.

When confronted about the incident on Facebook, Mr Laming replied: “Yes, I apologised for that and let the organisers know. Thanks for sticking up for the little guy.”

Mr Laming, who registered for the event under the name “Lucky Laming”, met with Reece last night to apologise for the incident, but said it could not have been prevented.

“The young bloke sprinted around us and then stopped two steps in front of me, I didn’t have a chance,” Mr Laming said. “I immediately wrote an incident report at the finish line, apologised online and by message, as well as arranging to meet up this afternoon.”

Ms Mairs said it was not an appropriate way for an elected official to act.
