A young man who was rushed to hospital in a serious condition on Thursday after being plucked from huge swells on the Gold Coast is now stable.
A spokesperson for Gold Coast Health confirmed the man’s condition on Friday after he was pulled from the water at Palm Beach about 5.15pm.
Onlookers brought him to shore and desperately performed CPR before paramedics arrived.
One witness urged the community to be considerate as the young man was suffering from mental health issues.
“He went in with his shoes on,” the witness said.
“The people in the comment section saying he deserved to die after attempting to swim in those conditions have it wrong.
“I don’t want him to wake up and see that.”
The young man, who is believed to be 18 according to the witness, was treated by paramedics earlier in the day for a separate incident.
Huge waves and king tides have battered the coastline with swells more than 12m high.
Lifeguards have pleaded with people to stay away from the water as Tropical Cyclone Alfred whips the Queensland coast into a frenzy.
Thousands of people have flocked to Gold Coast beaches this week, despite warnings about the dangers.
