Two injured in Saraji mine truck crash days after safety crackdown

Two people were taken to hospital with back pain and facial injuries from a truck crash at a Queensland mine just days after mine safety watchdog cracked down and partially suspended operations.

A Queensland Police spokesman said a truck and vehicle collided on private property on Saraji Road at about 1pm.

A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman confirmed a man in his 40s was taken to Dysart Hospital with back pain and a woman in hr 50s was taken to Moranbah Hospital Emergency with abdominal pain and facial injuries.

Emergency services attended the scene near BHP’s Saraji mine, where Resources Safety and Health Queensland suspended operations for working near bodies of water after a fatal hazard was identified.

It comes over four years after Gracemere father Allan Houston drowned in a pool of mud and water at Saraji after the dozer he was operating rolled down an embankment on December 31, 2018.

All operations working near bodies of water have been suspended until any risk has been reduced, which has a directive deadline of October 31.

The crash also comes just two days after a 71-year-old Bakers Creek man was killed in a car, motorcycle collision at Yalboroo.

The driver and only occupant of the car, a 28-year-old New South Wales man, was not physically injured and is currently assisting police with investigations.
