Teenager nearly drowns off Whitsunday coast on Easter Sunday

A teen was nearly unconscious after he was when paramedics found him after a near-drowning at a Whitsunday marina.

A boy is in a serious condition after a near-drowning about 30 minutes offshore from Airlie Beach.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said paramedics rushed to the north side of the Coral Sea Marina where the teen had been brought in by boat after the incident.

The spokeswoman said the boy responded as paramedics treated him and became “fairly conscious”.

She said the teenager was taken to Proserpine Hospital in at 2.51pm.

He was in a serious but stable condition.

Correction: An earlier version of this story quoted a Queensland Ambulance Service tweet and subsequent phone confirmation that the incident happened at the Coral Sea Marina. QAS has since confirmed the incident occurred 20-35mins off shore and QAS met the patient at the marina after they were brought back to shore by boat.
