More than 1.5ha of cane was burnt after a car stolen from a Mount Pleasant home was dumped and torched at a Foulden paddock.
Senior Constable Steve Smith said the car was found alight near the cane fields on Maraju Yakapari Rd in Foulden.
Emergency services extinguished the blaze but not before it tore through 1.6ha of nearby sugarcane on Wednesday night.
Constable Smith said the car was stolen on Tuesday about 4am from Fairmeadow St in Mount Pleasant.
He said the intruders entered the home from an unlocked door stealing the car keys from a bench.
The Holden was driven to a nearby service station in Mount Pleasant where footage showed two people refuelling the vehicle and leaving without paying.
Police are urging anyone with information about the original break and enter or the abandoning and torching of the car to come forward.
