Demolition works clear CBD site but timber pier supports will be incorporated in the new development

A striped back riverfront site is almost ready for its next life as the $800,000 demolition project nears completion.

The works, which took place as part of the proposed Mackay Waterfront Priority Development Area, have opened up gorgeous views of the Pioneer River.

A number of the structural supporting timber piers will be left in their original location to acknowledge the footprint of the former Seafresh building.

"Salvaged timbers from the demolished building are likely to be incorporated into the riverside design to capture a part of history," council documents read.

"The demolition and removal of the building will allow the site to form part of the overall revitalisation along the Pioneer River."

The document says the project was on budget but had stalled after identifying extra unsuitable material and approval delays.

The final remnants of the former Seafresh warehouse were torn down last Wednesday in a milestone step towards developing Mackay's waterfront.

A long-reach excavator was onsite to dismantle what remained of the crumbling warehouse that was slated for demolition after it partially collapsed into the Pioneer River in October.

The next step is preparing a detailed design for the new public realm area.

A pergola with seating and shaded areas is expected to be among the first installations at the cleared portion of the riverbank, plans for which are yet to be finalised before the council.
